Back Pain

TESTIMONIAL: The pain in my back and legs started about a year earlier, gradually getting worse, especially while driving. I decided to seek the help of my acupuncturist, however, several treatments didn't relieve the pain, neither did a series physio treatments. In fact, the pain was getting worse, I couldn't drive any distance without having to stop every 20 minutes to stretch out my leg. At this point, my cousin reminded me of the successful treatment she and her husband received at Innovative Therapy. Glenn found the cause and after a few treatments, I was pain-free at last. Thanks to Glenn's Innovative Therapy, driving is once again enjoyable. Rosie B (Orleans, ON)

Back pain, Degenerative disc disease, and sciatica, in general, are the most common conditions we treat at Innovative Therapy Canada, and with a high degree of success.

We offer an innovative and highly effective approach to the treatment of back pain, offering an alternative to surgery. We identify the cause(s) responsible for the back pain and correct them, thus resolving the condition.

Back pain typically results from the over stimulation of pain receptors within muscles, tendons and/or ligaments, which the back has a multitude of. The question is “Why?” Providing treatments of some nature directly on the back may be ineffective, as the back muscles may be a warning sign or symptom of a problem elsewhere. In many cases, the muscles are under strain due to an alignment issue with the spine, pelvis, legs and/or feet. This would result in a strain of one or more muscles in the region causing pain.

Stepping back and looking at the overall problem of back pain, we see problems with the muscles, tendons, ligaments and/or vertebral discs, all of which are classed as connective tissue. The connective tissue would not be under strain if the skeleton was in perfect alignment. We tell everyone we treat of the example with your car. Tires that are wearing out to one side are an indication of a misalignment with the front end of the car. In addition, anyone who spends good money to put new tires on their vehicle will absolutely ensure that a front end alignment is done at the same time, to ensure the new tires do not wear improperly. Our back is no different. Our skeleton must be in perfect alignment so as to not irritate the connective tissue that encompasses it. Our discs are the tires on the car.

In most cases, it’s the connective tissue that is pulling the skeleton out of alignment. The skeleton on the clinic is in perfect alignment, and will always be so because it has no connective tissue to cause any misalignment. Here is how the process begins.

How Back Pain Begins

A muscle somewhere in the lower body becomes tight, and over time becomes dysfunctional, when its fibres twist and tangle back on themselves. This results in that muscle becoming shorter than normal and somewhat more inelastic. This muscle could be in a foot, thigh, buttocks, groin, hamstring, or calf.

All muscles cross a joint somewhere, so this overall muscular dysfunction begins to place an alignment pressure on the joint it crosses. In the bodies process of trying to maintain equilibrium, this joint begins to cause alignment problems with another joint nearby. Yet another muscle becomes involved with this second joint, and the degenerating process has begun. More joints become involved as the chain reaction moves up to the muscles of the back.

Since the back sits on the pelvis, and the pelvis sits on the hips, and the hips sit on the knees and the knees sit on the feet, joint issues below the spine will ultimately result in back pain.

Pain Spasm Cycle

All muscles have receptors deep within their fibres whose job is to report various information to the brain about it. Some receptors report muscle fibre length, while others report such information as tension, pressure, temperature, and position. A severely afflicted muscle will see many of its receptors reporting problems with the muscles structure to the spinal cord. As a result, a feedback mechanism within the spinal cord will cause this muscle to become tighter, more severely affected with twisted fibres. Now the pain-spasm cycle has developed.

The more pain in a muscle, the tighter and more dysfunctional its fibres become, and the more dysfunctional these fibres become, the more pain develops.

This cycle continues until the muscle is in a state of contracture (spasm). The result is severe and limiting pain. As you may expect, if this muscle is located on your back, then you will have periods of severe back pain!

This is a simplistic view of the process but exactly what happens. Now how do we fix this problem...

Back Pain Treatment

Our approach to treating back pain is quite simple and logical. We must address the cause(s) and not the symptoms. As you have just read, the symptoms are specific back muscle(s) in a state of dysfunction with periods of contracturing spasms. Why? If we simply treat these muscles, the back pain will feel better for a brief period of time, but will redevelop because the overall cause(s) are not being addressed. You might be surprised to learn that in many cases, we resolve back pain without ever touching the back. Remember that the overall problem began somewhere between the foot and the pelvis. So, we find the source of the problem and correct it, reversing this domino effect on the skeleton.

We begin our diagnostics at the feet, which is the obvious starting point since they are the foundation for the entire skeleton. If the footings of a house are not straight, then the entire house will not be either.

Systematically, we determine where all of the dysfunctional muscles are located between the feet and the pelvis. The pattern of involved muscles will tell us where the main fault lies and where it began in the first place. Correcting this primary skeletal fault will put an end to the overall cause for the back pain. Then we systematically follow the pattern and return all affected muscles and joints to their normal state and function.

If these final back muscles are so severely damaged due to this process going on for so long, we will intervene and correct them. Otherwise, they will quickly return to normal state since the mechanism responsible for their dysfunctional state has been removed. Problem solved!

Treatments Begin

We use the combined approach of shockwave therapy, magnetic therapy and deep tissue manual therapy to address the muscles and joints involved.

We encourage you to read the article on shockwave therapy and magnetic therapy to fully understand the important role each plays in treating back pain.

Briefly

The body does nothing to resolve a dysfunctional muscle because it does not see a problem with that muscle. Dysfunctions within muscles can last for many years and even a lifetime if not properly treated.

Shockwave therapy, if correctly administered, will result in deliberate damage to the dysfunctions within the muscles structure. This is the only way to alert the body to the existence of a problem within that muscle. Once treated, the body will begin its regeneration process and rebuild the dysfunctional fibres, returning the muscle to its normal functional state.

Magnetic therapy may also be required to enhance this re-building phase.

We require 3-5 treatments to fully address most causes for back pain. They are administered each week for four straight weeks, or every other week over an eight week period. This depends on how quickly you have recovered from the previous treatment.

Our job is to correct the misalignment and to begin the process of returning all involved muscles to their healthy state. Treatments ensure that the dysfunctional components of all involved muscles are broken apart, so the body will begin to re-build them. Our part is completed once all of the dysfunctions have been addressed and the mechanical faults corrected. Your body will continue the muscular re-building phase for 2-3 months. Your back pain should be greatly diminished after the second treatment and almost completely gone after all treatments have been completed. You will not have back pain during the re-build phase.

Notes of Interest

Degenerative disc disease does not cause back pain. This is a form of spinal arthritis which is predominantly a pain-free process. People are not aware that they have started the arthritic process until it begins to affect the structures enough to irritate pain receptors. Our treatments can halt this process as it is caused by some alignment issues as described above.

Disc bulging, and hairline vertebral fractures do not cause back pain.
